We would liking to welcome Nicole from Living Safe to Townsville Kids. We will be sharing Nicole’s extensive knowledge in weekly articles with our Townsville Kids visitors. Nicole created Living Safe to share her knowlege with all parents, and give them the tools to make informed choices when it comes to what they purchase for their children. We are very excited to be able to share with you many interesting articles, tips and ideas from Living Safe.
I have been a freelance hair and makeup artist based in Melbourne Australia www.nicolegroch.com.au for over 20 years, working in the fashion, advertising and music industry both here and overseas. Quite some years ago now, I took it upon myself to rethink my attitude towards the makeup and hair products I used in my kit. I had been a vegetarian for years for ethical reasons, (although I love the taste of meat, I abhorred the way animals raised or hunted for human consumption are mistreated and killed) and I only used certified ‘cruelty free’ products in my work, but I became very interested in all the natural and organic products that were becoming more readily available and how toxic and dangerous the chemical based products were, (even the ones that were cruelty free). I did a great deal of research into the common ingredients used in the majority of cosmetics and hair products, and how dangerous and toxic many ingredients were, and how they can adversely affect our health.
Armed with all this knowledge I decided I had to convert my hair and makeup kit to not only just being cruelty free, but also as safe, natural and organic as possible. It took time to find the right products that would do a professional job, but I am happy to be able to say that these days I use on my clients, only the safest, cruelty free and most natural products that I can source.
Besides converting my kit, I wanted to really do something positive with my hair and makeup skills to help animals that are still suffering in cosmetics, testing laboratories. Over the years I was constantly turning down work as often I was asked to do hair and makeup for fashion advertisements, parade by designers and companies etc.. that were still using animal testing, or using “real” fur in their designs. So I approached the Australian non-profit organization CCF www.choosecrueltyfree.org.au and offered to start a cruelty free makeup’s tips page in their quarterly magazine and for their website, see- http://www.choosecrueltyfree.org.au/makeup.html and also I arranged a huge celebrity charity launch for the below poster I did hair and makeup on and organized. The launch at Soulmama in St.Kilda was aptly named after the poster, “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur!”
I was able to use my connections to also get more celebrity support for the front covers of the CCF magazines and for campaigns etc. After a few years I was asked to become one of the Directors of CCF which was great. I have also interviewed and spoken about animal testing and the alternatives, for various TV programmes and at public events and in schools, plus I have wrote many articles on animal testing and cruelty free living for the CCF Magazine.
My work over the years with CCF gave me quite a bit of experience in PR and writing and this lead me to doing some casual PR and advertising work for two well respected, natural and cruelty free companies, Aromababy and Elusyion Mineral Makeup.
These day I am blessed to be the proud mother of two beautiful children, a daughter aged almost 6 and a son who is almost 3 and along with doing my hair and makeup work and the PR for CCF, I have embarked on a journey that I am very passionate about and this is www.livingsafe.com.au . It is basically for now a one woman show, I have become the writer, editor, photographer, marketing and PR person for livingsafe.com.au, with the help of my very talented husband Jonathan who actually encouraged me to start my own health and safety site and actually designed and built the site for me. I couldn’t have done it and wouldn’t be able to still do it, without Jonathan, who is an absolute IT expert!!.
The reason my husband and I decided to create livingsafe.com.au was because I so passionate about the content I actually now write about and passing on this important information to others.
Ever since the birth of our 1st child almost 6 years ago, I have been extremely aware and concerned about the issues we cover in the site I discovered that if a product doesn’t fall under the category of being a food, or medical product, or if it doesn’t cause immediate, or obvious harm to our health, then it is able to be sold to the unaware consumers, no matter if it contains dangerous materials, ingredients or emits high levels of radiation, that has potential to cause serious life threatening illnesses and harm to our environment etc.
Each article I write I put a great deal of research into and I make sure the research is from a reputable and trusted source. All articles that shed light on a potentially dangerous product or issue, also offers a solution. I am not about scare mongering and leaving people helpless. There are safer alternatives and thankfully they are much easier and more accessible than people think.
Since we launched the site it has grown so much and we get now over 7000 visitors a month looking for help and advice on how to live a more natural, organic and cruelty free life.
The whole aim of Living Safe is, to give individuals easy tools and accurate knowledge to help them create a safe and healthy environment for their children, pets and also ultimately themselves. The site now features over 85 articles, a Safer Shopping Directory, our in-depth Product Review category and a fantastic Competitions & Giveaways page.
